Athletics at Jefferson College (Convent, LA)

BYLINE: UNKNOWN / Approximate date: October 1923

Sunday last the Jefferson team journeyed to Lutcher where they met the strong Jesuit High team of New Orleans. The game was called promptly at 3 PM with Mr. Daly (Holy Cross) as referee and Mr. Martinez (Jefferson) as umpire.

At the first sound of the whistle the Jesuit boys went into the fray and caught the local eleven quite off their guard. It did not take more than a minute for the Jesuit warriors to receive a touchdown. In a few more minutes the Jesuits had annexed another six points having successfully placed the pigskin across the goal line for the second touchdown of the game. These were due to fumbles by our nervous and inexperienced boys. After this the Jefferson team rallied but the Jesuits succeeded in scoring two more touchdowns in the first half.

In the second half neither team scored.

The Jefferson boys played as good a game as could be expected as the team was comprised of green members, many of whom had never played a football game before.

However, during the past week Coach Rodrigue [sic] has put his men through very strenuous practice and the team of today is much better than that of last week. The line has been strengthened while the backfield has acquired wonderful interference and speed.

This team left Friday to go to Lafayette to meet Southwestern Institute there. Southwestern has one of the best teams in the State this year and this contest from all prospects will be Jefferson's fiercest gridiron battle.
